About this

Is one page really enough?

Yes, and the licences say so in their own words. CC BY and CC BY-SA both state that attribution may be satisfied "in any reasonable manner based on the medium, means, and context", and both give a link to a page carrying the information as their own example of a reasonable manner. Neither one asks for the credit to sit on the same screen as the text. CC0 and public domain ask for nothing at all.

Why nothing here is written down

Every edition, source and licence on this page is read out of the text pack that ships it, at the moment you open the page. If a text is ever re-fetched under different terms, this page changes by itself. A hand-typed attribution page goes quietly wrong, and a wrong attribution page is worse than no page — it is a false statement about somebody else's licence.

What stayed on the reading screens

Which edition and which nusach you are reading — because that is not a legal notice, it is the answer to "what am I holding?", and it belongs in front of you. So did every halachic caveat: your printed text governs, minhagim differ, this is not a psak. And every explanation of a passage that was withheld, which tells you why words are missing. None of that is licence text and none of it moved.

Two texts that had nowhere to keep their facts

Eichah and the Kinnos ship as plain arrays of pesukim with no provenance fields at all — their facts existed only inside a sentence hardcoded on their own screens. The Kinnos are CC BY-SA, a live obligation. Those two are transcribed here from their own packs and the rig checks they are still present.

Questions people ask

Do I have to show the licence on every screen?

No. CC BY 4.0 and CC BY-SA 4.0 both allow attribution to be given "in any reasonable manner based on the medium, means, and context", and both name a link to a page carrying the information as an example of exactly that. CC0 and public domain material requires no attribution at all. This page is the whole of Lechem's obligation.

Then why does each screen still name an edition?

Because that is not there for the licence. Knowing you are holding Nusach Ashkenaz and not Nusach Sefard, or the Metsudah machzor and not another, is part of reading the text. It stays where you read.

Is anything missing from this page?

It cannot be, without going red. A rig reads the text packs on disk and fails the build if a pack ships that this page does not name, if a CC BY or CC BY-SA text loses its attribution here, or if the door to this page is removed.

Does Lechem change the texts?

It presents them in modified form — markup stripped, provenance separated from the words, chapters cut apart, fonts subsetted — and says so in the notice above, which is what the licences ask. Not one letter of any liturgy is altered; a rig compares the printed words to the pack's own bytes on every build.

What about the Hebrew font?

Noto Serif Hebrew, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. That licence asks that the copyright notice and the licence travel with the font files, not that they appear on screen. They travel: the full text is in the licence file shipped beside the font, named above.

Who decided these terms?

Not Lechem. Every licence on this page was set by whoever published the text — Sefaria, Hebrew Wikisource, Torat Emet, the Noto project. Lechem only reports them, and withholds any text whose licence it may not ship under.
