Lechem
Shnayim Mikra — kept properly, without keeping score
The one weekly obligation that is almost entirely a matter of tracking: which possuk, which pass, how far you got before Shabbos. Lechem holds the place so you can just say it.
Lechem is a helper and a reminder. It is never a ruling. For anything halachic, ask your Rav.
Shnayim mikra is the obligation people abandon for the most trivial reason in the world: they lose their place. Twice through the text and once through the targum, across a week, in gaps of ten minutes — and by Thursday nobody can remember whether that aliyah got its second pass.
So Lechem holds the place. It knows the parsha, it knows which pass you are on and which possuk, and it picks up exactly where you stopped, whether that was in the car on Sunday or in shul on Friday afternoon.
It shows you how much is left in a form that is actually useful — what remains before Shabbos, not an abstract percentage — and it does that without turning the week into a performance. No streak. No badge for finishing. Nobody else sees any of it.
Where the practice varies — the order of the passes, what counts as the third reading, the different customs for a double parsha — Lechem names the difference rather than deciding for you, and points you to your Rav.
